What I hear you say
Tim Atkinson
Executive Director of Imago Relationships International

My first day in my new job was spent in the company of Harville and Helen. What could be a better start?

I joined them at their annual Imago workshop at the Omega Center in upstate New York. By the end of the second day I saw 80 couples leaping in the air, shouting “I love you” to their partners. “Wow,” I thought, “What a job to be in”. What a privilege and honor to first learn the Imago dialogue from its creators.

My wife Helen couldn’t attend the Omega workshop, but she did join me in Boston, where Hedy and Yumi were collaborating with Terry Real. Helen and I had our first opportunity to practice Imago dialogue together. We also had a special opportunity to connect with Hedy and Yumi who have done so much to take Imago out to the world. When Hedy said “Wow”, we did too.

To find out how I could most help support Imago, I talked to a wide range of Imago therapists. I learned from them that although we bring connection to our clients, there is a great need to re-connect our Imago community, and to unite us so we can all work effectively together. That’s why I am working with the Imago Board, the faculty, Harville and Helen to build a detailed vision and the action plans to achieve it.

Many of these plans focus on improving the services we provide to Imago therapists, and making sure we can build an organization that supports members both in the USA and Internationally. This will include developing programs to help therapists build stronger practices, and finding effective ways to tell the world about the work we do.

Our plans also include some longer-term goals. Can you imagine a world in which everyone speaks Imago? This is the dream at the heart of our philanthropic programs, which will be funded by donations. We plan to increase the speed with which we bring Imago dialogue to communities, by working in partnership with schools, religious and social groups around the world. And we believe that as more people learn about the first steps in their own Imago journey, many more will decide to work with an Imago professional to learn more.

The plans that I am working on with the Board are a response to what we have heard you say. They will only be successful with your support, and I thank you for all the ways you provide that support, through membership, and participation in trainings and workshops.

We would love to hear more, so please do continue to guide us with your suggestions. Let’s connect!
