Does my relationship or marriage have to be in trouble before I can benefit from Imago?
Imago’s unique communication skills for families can help strengthen the feeling of love and connection in any relationship. Many attend Imago couples counseling retreats as a way to appreciate their partner more, to gain insight into why they fell in love, and to understand the hidden agenda of romantic love.
Many Imago Therapists learned about Imago initially in order to mend their own relationships, and have continued to use the tools daily to continue to strengthen them.

Why does Imago place such an emphasis on building trust in relationships?
Until you feel really safe to discuss things with your partner, it will be difficult to have the conversations that will help you revive the passion and hope in your relationship. The Imago dialogue creates a safe place in which to build understanding and trust.
Imago is a couples communication therapy, in which through learning about what the other partner thinks and feels, you work together to make the relationship far stronger and more joyful.

How effective can just one Imago weekend workshop be at mending relationships?
Imago’s couples counseling retreats focus on teaching communications skills for families. These skills can help you become your own expert at mending relationships so that you and your partner can continue to keep the excitement and energy of the couple’s workshop alive.
Many couples also choose to work on these tools with an Imago therapist, who can provide relationship advice and coaching to strengthen the work you do with your partner using the Imago dialogue.

What can I expect from an Imago workshop for couples?
The workshops are designed to be very safe and comfortable, and are focused on building trust in relationships.
You and your partner will learn to overcome communication problems in relationships through using the Imago dialogue. You will learn the fundamental principles of Imago, including how we choose our partner, and how this may lead to conflict, which through the dialogue becomes an opportunity for growth. It is like a couples counseling retreat, but it is you and your partner who work with each other, using the Imago communications skills and theory.
No one is required to share anything personal, but you can volunteer to demonstrate some of the Imago dialogue. At the end of the workshop most couples feel they have had a very special experience, and feel much closer to their partner, but also have a process they can use to continue to revive the passion and hope in their relationship.

How do I find out the qualifications of the Imago therapists?
All Certified Imago Therapists are required to maintain professional qualifications in the State or Country where they are located. In the USA this will include holding an advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate), and a license to practice psychotherapy if it is required in their state. The most common degrees are MA or MS in counseling, MSW in social work, M.Div in Pastoral counseling or PhD in clinical psychology.
We also require certified therapists to maintain membership of a recognized professional association, such as NASW for clinical social workers, AAMFT for marriage and family therapists, AAPC for Pastoral counselors, APA for psychologists, AMA for psychiatrists.
Most therapists list letters after their names in our directory which will show their advanced degree and/or their professional association.

Is there a big difference between the work I might do with an Imago Therapist and other marriage counseling?
Imago places a strong emphasis on creating a meaningful dialogue between you and your partner. You will spend much of your time in a dialogue with your partner, while the therapist acts as your guide and coach. This enables you and your partner to develop your own expertise in couple’s communication therapy, so that you develop the tools you both need for repairing relationships and keeping your love alive.
